A total of 20 former hunters in the provinces of South Sumatra and Bengkulu pledged to help stop hunting of Sumatran tigers here on Thursday.
The 20 hunters have repented after being assisted and guided by Lingkar Inisiatif Indonesia Foundation for the last two years, Iswadi, chairman of the foundation, said,
They have stopped hunting tigers and are committed to supporting Sumatran tiger conservation efforts, according to him.
"We have approach the hunters to repent, and they have declared that they will stop poaching tigers and will actively help conservation (activities)," Iswadi added.
"We are optimistic that this new approach can help increase the tiger population," he added.
Among the former hunters who have vowed to help stop tiger hunting is Mawi, who is now committed to helping conserve the tiger population.
"I am ready to help save the Sumatran tigers and ask other active hunters to stop," Mawi said.
Iswadi hopes that the government would assist the hunters who have repented, appreciate their good faith by helping facilitate them to change professions or provide alternative livelihoods.
